چکیده

High-level ice clouds play a complex role in the global energy budget by affecting infrared radiation emitted by the earth’s surface. In order to understand the climate system, it is necessary to increase our knowledge about the microphysical, radiative, and optical properties of cirrus clouds. In situ measurements on microphysical structures of cirrus clouds have been made by using special, high-altitude flying aircraft. Limited studies have been made to date. Two-dimensional optical array probes, which are often used for aircraft measurements of cloud particles, do not have sufficient resolution to discriminate between cloud droplets and ice crystals at sizes smaller than about 100 μm and cannot detect details of crystal habits.

A Composite and Microphysical Study of Jet Stream Cirrus Over the ARM Site

Cirrus are known to play an important role in the radiative budget of the earth-atmosphere system. Previous studies have shown that cirrus within strong jet streams account for about 40% to 60% of all cirrus observed in the continental United States during the winter (Menzel et al. 1992). However, the connection between the properties of mid-latitude cirrus clouds and the large-scale flow that ...

Classification of particle effective shape ratios in cirrus clouds based on the lidar depolarization ratio.

A shape classification technique for cirrus clouds that could be applied to future spaceborne lidars is presented. A ray-tracing code has been developed to simulate backscattered and depolarized lidar signals from cirrus clouds made of hexagonal-based crystals with various compositions and optical depth, taking into account multiple scattering. This code was used first to study the sensitivity ...

Rough and Irregular Ice Crystals in Mid-latitude Clouds

1. INTRODUCTION Cloud feedbacks are the largest source of uncertainty in climate models. In particular, uncertainties exist concerning the radiative forcing of clouds containing ice crystals, most notably cirrus. Indeed, whether cirrus clouds warm or cool the Earth's surface depends on ice crystal morphology. Reducing this uncertainty requires detailed in situ characterization of cloud particle...

Development of a Detailed Microphysics Cirrus Model Tracking Aerosol Particles’ Histories for Interpretation of the Recent INCA Campaign

Cirrus clouds play an important role in the earth’s energy balance. To quantify their impact, information is needed on their microstructure and more precisely on the number and size of the ice crystals. With the anthropogenic activity, more and more aerosol particles and water vapor are released even at the altitude where cirrus clouds are formed. Cirrus clouds formed in a polluted air mass may...

Cirrus layer microphysical properties derived from surfacebased millimeter radar and infrared interferometer data

Observational data regarding the properties of cirrus clouds are needed to aid in the development of accurate, physically based parameterizations in climate models. The Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, is providing continuous observations of cirrus clouds with a suite of instrumentation at several ocales. In this paper, we describe an ...
